Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop Empty Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop

Post by GexkaXXV Tue Feb 03, 2015 9:17 pm

I step back and watch as the neon green letters above my shop flicker to life. One of them sputters and dies and I have to smack it back to life. I smile. "Perfect." The neon letters spell out, Steal of a Deal. And beneath in non neon letters the words, Pawn and Thrift Shop. Beneath the sign, in the shop window, odds and ends are on display. There's a trombone, a floral hat, a frying pan, an old computer monitor, and a tennis racket. The window itself is a bit grimy and the store as a whole looks as if it needs some new paint.
My shop isn't exactly in the shopping district. It's a few streets over, in an area mostly dominated by large warehouses. Not many people would think to look here to buy goods. "Perfect."

I push open the door and walk inside. After flipping the cardboard sign to open, I flick on the lights and walk to the counter in the back.  The counter runs the entire width of the back of the store.Above the counter hangs another sign on uneven chains. It reads, You want it, we have it. We don't, we'll get it. And in tiny letters in the bottom corner, No refunds. I hop the gate and settle on a stool. I stick my feet on the counter and survey my establishment. The store itself isn't small, but the flickering lights, low ceiling and cluttered shelves give it a cramped feeling. The shelves are crammed with every nicknack and doodad under the sun, most of it junk. "Perfect."

And why wouldn't it be? After all, this shop is just a front. The real store is behind the door behind the counter. Business has been a little slow lately and I needed a place to store and sell my ill gotten gains. So isn't a store the perfect place?

Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop Empty Re: Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop

Post by ClerxhaXVI Tue Feb 03, 2015 9:42 pm

Clerxha quietly follows Gexka, silently trailing behind him. She hasn't talked to him in a while, but he's not acting more suspicious than usual. As a result, she decides that it's an okay day to see what he's up to--she can be sketchy if she wants... right? As she walks a few blocks out of the range of the shopping district, Cler weaves her way through some older warehouses. She sees him flick on the light to his... shop? She hadn't realized that the city's resident thief (no matter what he says, "object removal specialist" is not a title she will call him by) owns a shop. The items in the window are far from what she'd expect from Gexka. In fact, they seem more mundane than worth his time.

She reaches the shop's front door a couple minutes later. She walks in with a slight air of confidence, and a curious look on her face. "So this is where the great Gexka spends his time when he's not out on missions."

Clerxha walks to the front of the small room, passing older items that have certainly seen better days. Reading the sign above the counter, she smirks; noticing the miniature notice written in the corner, she laughs because it shows Gexka's personality. She leans against the counter, grinning at her fellow intangiperson (is that a word?). "How have you been?"

I look at the door as it creaks on its hinges and slide off the stool seeing a familiar face. "Clerxha, long time no see! I've been good. A bit bored, but good." I make a sweeping gesture, indicating the shop. "I had enough spare time to set this up. What do you think? It's not much, but," I point to the sign overhead, "it keeps my particular set of skills busy." I look at her inquisitively, suddenly wondering what she was doing in this part of the city. "So what brings you to my humble place of business?"

Clerxha smiles in approval; she turns away, looking at the shop and its items. "I see," she says in response to his first question. "I honestly expected more... well, thief-ish things... not such a... random array of objects."

She tucks a fallen curl of hair behind her ear before returning to face Gexka. "And I was curious about what you'd been up to recently." She lowers her voice before adding, "I actually might need your help with something." Her eyes light up with a surprising amount of mischief--or is it elation? But she's not about to say anything else if Gexka's hiding something (because who is she kidding, the building seems much bigger than the size of the room they're in, and she doubts that he'd hide anything he could sell).

I'm curious as to what Clerxha could need my help for, but decide not to ask about it now; if its important she'll tell me herself. I shrug.  "Well you caught me, I've been selling junk at unreasonable prices. Whatever shall I do?" My eyes glint as they sweep over the assortment of objects on the shelves. "You're no dummy Clerxha. You know it would be stupid of me to put stolen goods on display." I pause for a moment and contemplate something. 'Might as well show her. I trust her and if she's curious she'll eventually find out for herself anyway.' I reach under the counter and pull out a gigantic ledger. I drop the ledger onto the counter with a thud and open it. I hand Clerxha a pen and then turn around to unlock the door behind me. "Let's do this properly. Write down the name of an object. It doesn't matter what it is. Then we'll see if we have it in stock." I rub my hands together; I haven't had a chance to showoff for anyone yet. "I think you'll like this."

Clerxha laughs before shrugging--Gexka does have a point. Although rules are much more relaxed than other places, she's sure that there would be some kind of repercussions for selling stolen goods. To her surprise, he seems to contemplate telling her. Her face morphs into one of happiness and confusion when Gexka takes out a huge ledger from beneath the counter. Taking the pen from him, she opens the book and presses the pen against an empty line. "Um... okay?"

She spends a couple seconds thinking about what she should write before deciding on something that might actually be useful to her. She writes in a tight script the words "scale set". Hopefully there's a set of balances and weights somewhere. It seems like something he might have stolen just for the heck of it. Besides, getting one shipped into the Dark City would take forever. Anyway, she's almost out of poison ingredients... and poisons anyway. She lifts the book in her arms, showing it to Gexka. "Like this?" she inquires as he finishes unlocking the door.

I tuck the the key into a pocket and turn to look at what Clerxha wrote. I make a face and turn to walk through the door. "I expected a challenge from you Clerxha; you could have written any number of details. With such broad perimeters, we won't even have to check the stock books." I gesture at the smaller room we've entered.

The room looks nothing like the one we've just come from. While its definitely smaller, there's no cramped feeling. The recessed lighting is bright and white and the whole room is spotless. Cases of books are arranged neatly around the edge of the room, with absolutely no gaps and with each book being at least as large as the ledger we left in the other room. The books contain every item I currently have in stock and are, of course, arranged in alphabetical order.
I walk to the opposite wall where another door is situated between two bookcases. This door is made of reinforced steel but has no obvious way to open it. "This door can only be locked and unlocked from the inside. An obvious design flaw, unless you can somehow walk through objects. But that's ridiculous." I wink, walk through the door, and open it from the other side with a bow. "Right this way, Madame Clarice."

Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop Empty Re: Steal of a Deal, Pawn and Thrift Shop

Post by ClerxhaXVI Sun Feb 08, 2015 8:44 pm

Clerxha shrugs. "Next time, I'll be more specific," she responds. But she's not too sure about what kind she wants--she still remembers before the Organization, when all she had was whatever she could sneak out of the labs. "Although that's good to know."

The brunette looks around in awe at the books, her jaw dropping as she reads the label on a ledger's spine. Her respect for Gexka just went up about a million times. (Okay, so maybe she's a little obsessed with books and organization. Just a little bit.) She closes the ledger she's holding and tucks it under her left arm before reaching out to look at one of the many books before her. "Gotta say, I'm impressed."

The only portion wall that doesn't consist of bookshelves is a door made of steel. She raises an eyebrow before Gexka explains how the door works. She has a similar door in her shop, for the antique and expensive books. But she's gotta appreciate the fact that few people could break through the door. She's about to walk through intangibly when the door opens; she pouts, but it quickly morphs into a smile as she moves forward. Clerxha curtsies mockingly before commenting, "My name's not Clarice, by the way. Although, the nickname's new. Unless you've called me that before..." She doesn't remember, whoops.

I wave a hand, dismissing the compliment. "Oh please, this is nothing. And forget about the name, its not important . Now then..." The smile I've been holding in nearly splits my face in two. "behold my masterpiece!" With a grand flourish, I sweep my coat aside, allowing Clerxha a clear view of the room we've just entered.
The room is big. No, huge. No giant. No, the best word would probably be vast. The opposite wall is almost lost across the vast expanse, the other walls seem miniscule, and even the ceiling overhead can't be seen beyond the huge floodlights. And the room's not even empty. Racks, towering high overhead, hold pallets and boxes filled to the brim with stolen goods. Prominent displays are scattered here and there through the racks, the most noticeable exhibiting antique furniture, expensive paintings, and rare jewels. Rolling ladders give access to the both the mundane and the extravagant. Anything you could possibly want, all in alphabetical order. "Now, would scale set be under weights or instruments? Of course we could probably just check scales."

(Let's imagine Costco or BJ's, except a 100 times larger.)

Clerxha whistles in appreciation, and the sound echoes in the room. Her eyes scan the inventory, not surprised at the fact that most of it looks expensive. "I see you've been busy," she comments as she walks further into the room. She feels even smaller than she actually is because of the out-of-sight ceiling.

"If it's not under scales, I'm not sure," she glances toward Gexka, "After all, you're the one who organized it... right?" Based on the arrays of items, the contents of Gexka's inventory are arranged alphabetically. So Cler begins walking down the rows, towards the items whose items are farther along in the dictionary.

"Hey, It's going to take forever to walk all the way to the 'S's. Hop on one of these." I walk over to a little security booth, with walls literally made of monitors, and pull out two Segways. I roll one at Clerxha and hop on the other. "As for the organizing, yeah, I was the one who set it up, along with everything else. But this place wasn't completed in a day, or even a year. This building contains items from hundreds of worlds and I had to move them all here myself. It's impossible to remember every item from every day. Sure we might find a set of scales under scales, but we might also find an iguana. It all depends on my reasoning on those particular days." I shrug and smile. "Race ya!" I take off on the Segway, not bothering to keep to the aisles, driving straight through the racks.

Clerxha catches the Segway before stepping onto the platform. "Well then," she replies. "That's impressive. And I hope that it's not an iguana. That wouldn't be the same." Although, she silently wonders what the species of iguana would be and whether it could help with her poisons.

He exclaims "race ya" at her and takes off through the shelves. "Hey! So not fair!" she calls out, following him. She passes through aisle after aisle, catching up to Gexka. "You cheated."

I slow down a bit to let Clerxha catch up. "Cheated, found a better way to win, potato, tomato. Besides, I know the place a fraction of a bit better than you." As we emerge on the Sc aisle, I begin to scan the signs. After a bit, and still only at scabbards, I let out a sigh, and spin the Segway around so I can speak to Clerxha. "I think next time I'll just take the dark portals. So what's been happening with you?"

Clerxha smiles and shakes her head in amusement. "Dark portals would've been great," she replies before sighing. "I actually haven't done much lately other than trying to reconcile with the numberless that are protesting. And you know, being all assassin-y and running a bookstore and going on missions..."

She shrugs as they pass a number of fan-flowered plants that were probably labeled by scientific name. "What about you? I haven't seen you around much. Although, I've been really scatterbrained lately, so maybe I have and I've forgotten..." Clerxha laughs sheepishly, because she's pretty sure it isn't true, but who knows.

I smile at Clerxha's definition of not doing much being completely busy. "I've mostly been keeping to myself. Aside from setting up this store, I've mostly been in other worlds; exploring and keeping scarce. For some odd reason the numberless like thieving numbered less than they like the ordinary ones." My smile dims a little. "But hey, there's always going to be people who are against you, nothing you can do about that."
"Ah, here we are." I hop off my scooter and watch as it just keeps going until it eventually crashes into a display of school supplies. "We're definitely taking the portals back" I look up at a large box with the word scales on it, thirty feet above our heads. I walk over to a ladder and roll it along its track to the box. I'm up the ladder in a flash and begin throwing things out of the box. Rulers, yardsticks, reptile scales, music sheets, and  other "scales" rain down around Clerxha's feet.

"Bingo!" I climb down the ladder with only my feet because my arms are so crammed with smaller boxes that I can't even see. The boxes are of all sizes with many different pictures on them. "So we've got here your analytic scales, your spring scales, your balance scales, your pendulum scales, and your market scales. Of course for your less complicated scales we have a wide range of materials to choose from. How about a pure silver one? Wait, I almost forgot." I lower the boxes to the ground and rush back up the ladder. I come back down with a smaller load of assorted sets of weights.

Clerxha's smile fades as well. She's surprised that the Numberless (the term is starting to taste like acid whenever she says it aloud) don't like Gexka. It's not fair for them to be so mad, she thinks as she listens to Gexka's comments as he stops and begins taking stuff of the shelves.

A couple items drop on the floor, clattering next to her. She immediately turns intangible, letting the items fall through her. Once Gexka returns from the shelves, she grins. In his arms there's a silver balance scale that would be perfect for what she needs. Snatching it out of his grip, she places it down on the floor and drops one of her senbon on one side, and a small one-gram weight on the other. As the balance evens out, a wide grin crosses her face. She stares at the balance as though it's the best thing in the world.

I set down what I'm carrying and run an evaluating eye over the scale Clerxha chose.  It's not the pure silver one (which is mostly for decoration anyway) but it still has a fair amount of the precious metal in it. "Well, you certainly seem to know what your after, though I should warn you that thing is a bit expensive. So do you want talk about price now or is there something else you want to find first?"

I suddenly realize the mess I've made and the smile leaves my face. I really am an idiot sometimes. "Great, now I've got to clean this all up. And I hate cleaning." I begin gathering all the items I threw out of the scales box in my haste. "This will only take a second Clerxha."

Clerxha glances up from the balance as Gexka speaks. "I'd hope I know what I'm looking for... I'll be using this to concoct poisons," she comments cheekily. Her smile fades as she thinks about what other ingredients and equipment she needs. She still has plenty of the ingredients from Mamoreal, since she hasn't had to use the super-toxic poison much in the past few years.

"Take your time," Cler replies with a chuckle. She sees Gexka put away most of the random scale-related items, and she picks up a large green reptile scale that had landed under her feet. Reaching over to hand it over, an idea strikes her. "Would you have seeds or plants that are poisonous somewhere?" Her voice is filled with doubt--Gexka probably wouldn't keep anything living in a place as big as this warehouse; she doesn't think he'd risk profitable items.

I dump what I'm carrying into the box and take a moment to briefly rearrange the items into some semblance of order before going back down for the rest. "Isn't the point of a poison to kill someone? So wouldn't it not matter if you don't get the ingredients exactly right?" After another two trips up the ladder, the only items left are some small scales, which I pocket. "Okay, now did you really ask about plants? Oh yeah that's right, I haven't seen you since then so I guess you wouldn't know." I peer down the aisle till I spot the fan-flowered plants that we passed earlier, far down the aisle. "Come on!" I grab Clerxha by the arm and pull her into a dark portal. We emerge right next to the plants and I sit down. I pull a pot over to me and stare at the plant growing in it. After a moment the plant begins to wriggle and shrink. When only the stem and a few leaves remain the plant begins to regrow. In seconds the plant sprouts purple, bell-like flowers. "Wolfsbane. I didn't allow the toxins to grow of course, so they're safe. If you tell me what plant you want or even a description of it, I can grow it for you."

Clerxha opens her mouth to respond that if she mixes a poison improperly, the effects could be disastrous to her or completely ineffective. She decides against it; then she might have to explain that she created a poison-making lab in her room in the castle.

At Gexka's comment about plants, Cler arches an eyebrow in confusion. "Yeah, no clue," she replies before looking down the aisle in the same direction as Gexka. "What are you--" There's a tug on her arm and she's pulled through a dark portal. She emerges farther down the aisle with the scale set clutched to her chest. "...looking at... We could have walked," she finishes lamely.

She's confused as to why he sits down, but as the fan-flower plant begins to transform, her eyes widen. Recognizing the stems and the formation of blooms, she mouths the plant's name, aconite, as Gexka calls it by another name. That's wicked.

Reaching out to touch the purple flower, she smiles, her nose crinkling at the thought that he could change it to not be toxic. "Two things. One: Can I have the aconite? It's so pretty, and not being poisonous would make it a great houseplant." She smiles hopefully before continuing, "Two: Would you be able to make jequirity? I think its scientific name is Ab... Abrus preca.... shoot... I can't remember the name..." she frowns at her poor memory, but silently hopes that Gexka knows what she's talking about.

I stand up, stretch, and then pick up the pot. I don't recognize the name aconite but understand that she's referring to the wolfsbane. "I have no problem with you keeping this, but I'll need to hold on to it for a bit. It's an artificial plant and for the moment is living off of me. In a day or two it will stabilize and you can come pick it up and treat it like any other plant." I frown trying to think of the other plant Clerxha mentioned. "Jequirity? Jequirity? I don't recognize that name but I'm sure I could make it. I'll look it up and you can pick it up when you come get this one. Which reminds me, do you have any books on botany? Specifically ones with pictures? I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to that kind of stuff and the plants will turn out better if I have an example to work off." I briefly thought of simply stealing the book but realized I wouldn't be able to find it on my own among the huge collection in Clerxha's shop.

Clerxha nods in response. She's never heard of magic that works like that, but hey--there are so many different types of magic that exist. Especially with the variety of nobodies, somebodies, and... others in the Dark City. But anyway, two days isn't that long. At the very least, it gives me time to clear away some of the boxes from the shop. Or my room. The customers might freak out if I leave it in the shop, no matter if it is non-toxic...

His confusion over her request causes her to cease her meandering thoughts. Cler nods, understanding that it's not normally used in poisons. "And yeah, I do," she replies to his question about any botany books. There's a spare copy of the botany book she uses in the back of her shop... somewhere there, at least. "It might actually take me a day or two to shift through the boxes and find it." She's silently thankful that he didn't just steal the book from her shop... Not that anyone other than him has stolen from there--at least to the best of her knowledge. "But I'm sure I have it," she adds hastily, "I definitely purchased three copies of the book, and it's the most comprehensive I've ever found." She extends a hand to him, "If you want, I'll hold the plant." It's not much of an offer, but she figures that she might as well do something.

For a moment I think of making the wolfsbane walk on its own using its roots, but then decide that I don't want a trail of dirt all over my floors. I hand the plant to Clerxha and then look up and down the aisle. "So is there anything else? I might have some non-plant poison ingredients lying around. But even if there's nothing else you wish to purchase, that doesn't mean you have to check out right away; how about some window shopping?" I open two dark portals, one on my left and one on my right. "This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the left portal - the story ends, you walk back up into my shop and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the right portal - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep my stockroom goes." I pull out a random pair of sunglasses and put them on. Thunder booms ominously from nowhere. (I'll have to look into that later.)

Clerxha walks forward towards the right portal, "Some window shopping might be good," she comments with a halfhearted shrug. She's not particularly busy at the moment, anyway. But as if to spite her and her desire to do something fun and to just goof off for a little bit, her holocommunicator buzzes.

She stops mere inches away from the portal, and flicks on the screen. There's a new assassination that she needs to do, and the screen shows the mug shot of a politician from a different world. "Of freaking course," she grumbles, switching off the screen. "Just had to be a time-sensitive one..."

Clapping her hands together, she rests her chin on top of her folded knuckles. "Would a rain-check be possible?" she asks, tilting her head slightly. "My other job calls."

My shoulders slump, the glasses fall off my nose, and I look dejected in general. (Of course the rolling thunder doesn’t stop because rolling thunder out of nowhere is completely normal.) “Awwwww… But I really wanted you to walk through the right portal so you’d be super surprised when it dumps you back in my shop anyway because both portals actually lead to my shop and I never planned to actually show you anything.” Having finished moaning, I straighten up and fuse the two portals into one. I smile flickers back onto my face. “Hey, a thief’s got to have some secrets you know.”  I walk through the portal and back into the part of my shop that’s open to the general public. I hop over the counter and jot down some notes in the huge ledger from before, before ringing up Clerxha’s purchase on an incredibly antiqued cash register. Let’s just say the number that comes up isn’t low.
